Future of Work post Covid-19: Return to Office by INCUBSENCE

15 months back the Covid-19 pandemic forced the companies to shut the offices and solve the logistic hurdles of providing work tools in the houses of the workforce. Working in pajamas was seen as the new cool but soon that became a nightmare for most of the employees. Mass vaccination is picking up speed in India and the companies also came forward to start vaccinating employees and their dependents. This coupled with the ease in the restrictions of lockdown is fostering the debate and execution of ‘return to office’ following Covid-19 appropriate behaviour and local rules and guidelines.

INCUBSENCE has been doing extensive research on how negatively work from home is impacting the daily lives of employees. 71% of employees in our survey agreed that while working from home, if anything happens to the machine or to the internet or to their mental state, they become their own HR & IT guy. When asked by the participant whether video conferencing has the ability to replace in-person office interactions, 79% voted in the favour of in-person office interactions. 54% employees said that they have lost the sense of being the “part” of the organization they work for. We further asked employees if they would want to commute to offices after two doses of covid-19 vaccination, a total of 51% employees showed interest in going back to office.  When asked whether work from home replaces an office, 75% of employees voted against the work from home.

However, how to bring back workers in the office is still a big question mark across the board. Employers are quite sensitive toward the mental emotions that can come into the minds of the employees while returning to offices.

It is not a simple methodology to announce the comeback of all employees all of a sudden; rather it has to be a slow and steady process based on the employees who suffer most due to work from home and who is willing to volunteer to come back to office ensuring covid-19 appropriate behaviour along with following the policies, procedure laid down by the companies as well as the local authorities.

Companies would need to equip themselves and employees with state of the art technology tools that will restructure the post pandemic digital workplace.

Yet, it is not a one size fits all, it would be an experiment to draw the boundaries between work from home and work from office. HR’s will keep on laying policies & procedures when the pace of covid-19 slowls & vaccination drive picks up the pace, and as and when they will hear from employees on what works for them.
